No.81/2015: BIDV, ANZ and MLA host talks on beef and dairy industry in Vietnam

Hanoi, November 9, 2015 - The Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam JSC (BIDV), ANZ Bank (Vietnam) Limited (ANZ) and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) co-organized the dialogue ”Vietnam - Developing a modern, integrated and sustainable beef and dairy industry”.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, representatives from Party’s Central Economic Commission, Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, Australia, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, North Australia, Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia and Australian government’s trade agencies in Vietnam were in attendance.

The seminar aimed at connecting Vietnamese and international managers, experts, businesses to promote the effective development of beef and dairy industry in Vietnam; supporting the connection, sharing of experience, business cooperation amongst companies operating in the supply chain of the industry, from breeding, processing, trading cow to exporting and importing beef and milk. In particular, ANZ and MLA act as the units connecting the Australian beef industry enterprises with Vietnam while BIDV connects Vietnamese businesses as well as proposing useful solutions to the industry.

The seminar included five sessions: (i) government’s policy and plan for the development of beef and dairy industry; (ii) prospects and opportunities for export and development of the Vietnam’s beef industry towards 2030, (iii) opportunities, challenges and potential resources for areas in the supply chain of the beef industry in Vietnam; (iv) Overview of the dairy industry in Vietnam and growth opportunities; and (iv) BIDV and ANZ Bank’s financing solutions for beef and dairy industry.

Addressing the seminar, Mr. Tran Bac Ha - Chairman of BIDV said, ”BIDV is committed to provide preferential short- and long-term credit packages in the 2016 -2020 period to business investing in beef and dairy industry. BIDV is also willing to work together with the livestock industry to continue researching more fully and carefully to evaluate the opportunities and challenges when the free trade agreements on agriculture take effect. Besides, the Bank will also support the development of policies for localities; providing advice and orientation to businesses investing in the potential cattle industry in Vietnam'.

Mr. Dennis Hussey, CEO, ANZ Vietnam commented, ”Vietnam is moving forward on the integrated development path of the beef and dairy industry. This promises more jobs will be created for rural areas, providing high-quality food to consumers, and likely bringing Vietnam to become an exporter of meat and milk in the region. ANZ is pleased to be with BIDV and MLA as well as the Australia beef and dairy industry's leading experts to play a leading role in the formation of this important initiative”.

Currently, Vietnam has been strongly integrated into the world through free trade agreements (FTAs) concluded with major economies, especially TPP Agreement with 12 partners including USA – the world’s largest economy. Given the integration, the livestock industry, particularly beef and dairy industry will have opportunities to grow such as access to global value chains to expand to world market, access to modern technologies and reduction in investment cost, thereby accelerating the process of restructuring of the industry. However, integration also poses great challenges: (i) the gap in development levels between Vietnam livestock industry and developed agriculture countries joining FTAs with Vietnam, (ii) greater competition while the tariff barriers are lifted, and (iii) limitations on input of breed quality to meet the international standards and high production costs.

The seminar brought about opportunities to connect, learn and seek useful solutions for businesses joining the potential beef and dairy industry in Vietnam.
