No.03/2015: BIDV launches VND25-billion charitable program for the poor

On 19 January 2014, Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam JSC (BIDV) announced the charitable program on giving New Year (Tet) gifts to the poor people and health insurance cards to poor women worth up to VND25 billion .

66,666 Tet gifts

“Tet gifts for the poor” is an annual charitable program of the bank organized since 2009 at Tet festive holiday. With the desire to bring the poor a warm Lunar New Year 2015, BIDV’s trade union raised funds for 66,666 Tet gifts worth VND20 billion to disadvantaged people in 63 cities and provinces in the country. Each gift costs VND300,000.

This is the 7th consecutive year BIDV has carried out the program, focusing on ethnic minorities, people in remote or calamity-hit areas, poor state employees and workers, poor patients, elderly, and homeless children. BIDV branches’ trade unions will send their persons to localities to present the Tet gifts directly to the poor people. It is expected that every poor household will receive BIDV’s Tet gifts by 3 February 2015 for a warmer Tet.

At the launch of the program, BIDV directly presented VND250 million to the National Fund for Vietnamese Children under Vietnam General Confederation of Labour as gifts to needy children at child protection centers; VND1 billion to the Golden Heart Fund under Labor Newspaper as Tet gifts for poor state employees and workers in 63 provinces and cities.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Hong, Vice President of Vietnam General Confederation of Labour said, “‘Tet gifts for the poor’ is a social security activity which has good humanity and should be implemented at scale. The program shows the mutual love, solidarity and sharing of the society, contributing to the implementation of policies and guidelines of the Party and State to help people with difficulties. BIDV and the Confederation of Labor have worked together to bring Tet gifts to the poor people throughout the country for the past 7 years and we hope that this traditional activity will continue to be maintained by BIDV”.

27,000 health insurance cards for poor women

Also at the ceremony, BIDV announced the sponsorship for health insurance cards to the poor women in the country with a total value of VND5 billion. This program will provide some 27,000 disadvantaged women the opportunity to access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare. Currently, women are at high risk of serious health problems due to their poverty and limited access to healthcare service. The health insurance cards will help improve the quality of the poor’s lives, especially vulnerable women, and reduce maternal mortality ratio. The program also shows the interest and sharing of the bank officers and employees in the community health care, especially poor and near-poor women with difficulties.

“For the Tet gift program, BIDV branches’ trade unions will actively coordinate with Provincial Fatherland Front Committees, Confederations of Labour in provinces and cities to bring the gifts to each locality and the poor.”, said Mrs. Truong Nguyen Phuong Lan, Vice Chairman of BIDV Trade Union, “BIDV will complete the presentation of gifts to localities before 3 February 2015. Also, the bank will work with the Ministry of Health to quickly implement the program on giving health insurance cards to poor women to help them access to health services to have better health to work”.

With the announcement of the program on giving Tet gifts and health insurance cards to the poor women, BIDV brought “double happiness” to the needy families throughout the country, giving them more confidence to overcome their difficulties.

The Bank has donated a total of over 404,000 gifts worth 111.2 billion to the poor since 2009.
